This morning, I had an 8 am flight from SFO to Washington Dulles Airport. However, ten minutes after liftoff, there was some cabin pressure/whatever malfunction and the pilot couldn’t continue and flew back into SFO. In the end, everyone had to come off the plane and reboard another one. This whole thing took like three hours before we were finally up in the air. The whole time I was passed out in my seat because I woke up so early today.
I called my mom later and she told me Virgin Airlines gave each passenger $100 for the “inconvenience”, which is a pretty nice gesture. So the price of my “inconvenience-per-hour” is around $33.33. I was paid $33.33/hr to sleep and then reboard the plane.
I find that funny, because on the flip side, the price of my “convenience-per-hour” at my Chinese tutoring job is “only” $10/hr, and believe it or not, I’m actually supposed to stay awake for that task and do a good job.
I wonder how they came up with $100 as their amount to compensate? What if Virgin Airlines paid everyone the rate they earned normally at their work? I wouldn’t mind, but maybe someone else would. Maybe Virgin used some algorithm that calculated everyones time to be worth $33.33/hour. Maybe I should walk into work next Monday and demand that I get a raise to $33.33/hour because Virgin believes I am worth that much for the task of sleeping.
I’m just kidding (I really like my job and would do it for free), but the world is a interesting place sometimes.
